The Diamond Hill Columbarium next to the Crematorium was also designed with the garden concept which gives people a sense of serenity. The Chinese tradition of “bai saan” (the act of going up the mountain to pay respect to the ancestors at festivals) is reflected in the design. To this end, the roof of this columbarium building is flights of landscaped steps, enables people to access to the niches of their ancestors on the different floors in a nature like environment. The design of the building takes care of the effective people flow and natural ventilation, it also addresses the concern over possible adverse psychological impacts to locals in the urban setting.
In Diamond Hill, the columbarium as a scary ash-storing structure has been successfully turned into a public park enjoyed by the people all year round. In the building, there are also a number of exits leading to Po Kong Village Road for effective crowd dispersal. To access the niches from the ground, there are several wide staircases, and two passenger lifts for the aged or the disabled. And on each floor, there is a three-meter wide passageway leading the grave-sweepers to the niche-bays.
